What Are Some Of The Situations In Which You Might Need SR-22 Insurance?
Posted on: 22 July 2021
There is a lot of confusion out there about SR-22 insurance. Basically, SR-22 insurance is not actually a special type of car insurance; instead, it involves your insurance company filing an SR-22 form with the courts to provide documentation that you have insurance as a driver. If you've heard of this car insurance-related situation, you could be wondering if you are supposed to have an SR-22 filing. This is something that is typically court-ordered, and there are a few situations in which SR-22 filings are required. For example, these are some of the most common scenarios in which a person might have to have an SR-22 filing from their insurance company.
You've Driven Without Car Insurance
In most places, drivers are required to have liability car insurance in place. This is designed to protect other drivers. Basically, if you are involved in a car accident that is your fault, you are required to have car insurance that will cover the damage to the other driver's car, the other driver's medical bills, and other similar expenses. If you have been involved in a car accident in which you didn't have proper car insurance—or didn't have insurance at all —then you might be required to have an SR-22 filing for a few years to prove that you are properly insured.
You've Been Charged With a DUI or DWI
If you have recently been charged with driving under the influence—whether you were accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both—then you might be required to have an SR-22 filing in place. After all, you are probably considered to be a high-risk driver because of your DUI or DWI. Be aware that in addition to paying more for your insurance if you need an SR-22 filing, there is a good chance that you will be charged higher car insurance premiums for a few years after your conviction. Luckily, though, there are car insurance companies that offer affordable rates for drivers who need an SR-22 filing and who have been charged with either a DUI or DWI.
You've Received a Lot of Traffic Tickets
In some cases, you might need an SR-22 filing even if you haven't gotten in serious trouble when driving. For example, if you have had multiple traffic tickets during a short period of time, you might need an SR-22 filing, even if none of those tickets were particularly serious.
